For survivors

We're so sorry for your loss.

Losing your veteran is hard enough. Here is an honest answer about what we can do, and where to find the VA benefits and free help that may be there for you.

What VA Disability Pro can and can't do

VA Disability Pro is built to help living veterans prepare their own disability claims. We can't prepare or file a survivor claim, so there's nothing you need to sign up for or pay us for here.

Everything on this page is free: the VA's survivor benefits, the forms they use, and people who will help you file at no cost.

VA benefits survivors may apply for

The VA decides who qualifies. Each link goes to the VA's own page with the rules and how to apply.

  • Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC)

A tax-free monthly payment for an eligible surviving spouse, child or parent. A spouse or child applies with VA Form 21P-534EZ. A parent applies with VA Form 21P-535.

Forms: VA Form 21P-534EZ · VA Form 21P-535

  • Survivors Pension

A monthly payment for an eligible surviving spouse or unmarried child of a wartime veteran, based on income and net worth limits. Apply with VA Form 21P-534EZ.

    Forms: VA Form 21P-534EZ

  • Accrued benefits

Money the VA owed your veteran that wasn't paid before they died. A surviving spouse or child asks for it on VA Form 21P-534EZ. If there is no surviving spouse, child or dependent parent, the person who paid certain expenses can ask to be reimbursed on VA Form 21P-601.

Forms: VA Form 21P-534EZ · VA Form 21P-601

  • Burial benefits

Help with burial and funeral costs for the person who paid them, who can be a family member or friend. Apply with VA Form 21P-530EZ. Some claims have a time limit, so check the VA page soon.

    Forms: VA Form 21P-530EZ

  • CHAMPVA health coverage

Health coverage that may be available to a surviving spouse or child, for example when the veteran died of a service-connected condition. Apply with VA Form 10-10d.
