How long does a VA disability claim take? The 5 phases explained
A VA disability claim moves through five phases, from Claim Received to the final decision. Here is what each phase means, roughly how long claims take, and what actually speeds things up.
Once you file, the waiting begins, and refreshing the status tracker becomes a habit. Timelines vary widely by claim, but the process itself follows a predictable set of phases. Knowing what each one means makes the wait less stressful.
The five phases
1) Claim Received: the VA has your claim. 2) Initial Review: a reviewer checks it for completeness. 3) Evidence Gathering, Review, and Decision: the longest phase, where the VA collects records and may schedule a C&P exam. 4) Preparation for Decision: the rating is being finalized. 5) Complete: the decision is made and your letter is on the way.
Do not panic if it moves backward
It is common and normal for a claim to move back to Evidence Gathering, for example after a C&P exam adds new records. That is not a bad sign, it usually means the VA is still developing your claim.
What actually speeds it up
Submitting complete evidence up front, as a Fully Developed Claim, avoids the back-and-forth of the VA requesting records. The VA publishes a current average processing time, so check the official page below for the latest figure rather than relying on an old blog number.
